Self Love

4 Ways to Practice Self Love

We live in a world where we chase after the acceptance of everyone else.  From being accepted in our jobs,  to even being accepted in the social world, it can be a lot of pressure trying to please others. However, it’s easy to prioritize pleasing others over pleasing yourself. Some people may confuse selfishness with self love. The truth is that there’s a very big difference.

It’s possible to give yourself the attention and respect you deserve without it being arrogant or selfish. Self love is all about valuing yourself and treating yourself with the kindness and respect you hope to receive from others.

After all, if you expect others to treat you kindly, then why would you expect yourself to treat yourself any less kindly? If you’re looking for ways to practice a little more self love, then here are some powerful ways to do it.

Treat Yourself

Once in a while, it’s important that you indulge a little. Buy yourself caviar, take a bubble bath, and get that massage you’ve always wanted. However, treating yourself doesn’t always necessarily have to be purchasing a product or service. Sometimes treating yourself can be allowing yourself to sleep in, or watching another episode of a show. The idea is to do something that brings you joy and fulfills you —without strings attached.

Forgive Yourself

One of the worst things you can do is hang on to guilt or self loathing. It’s important that you forgive yourself the same as you would forgive a friend or family member. No one is perfect, and you’re not any different.

Let go of perfectionism, and stop holding yourself to unrealistic standards. Instead of dwelling on your mistakes, practice letting them go and practicing self forgiveness. Remember— growth comes from learning from each mistake not being perfect. Part of self love is embracing yourself flaws and all.

Keep Your Body Healthy

Part of being a happy person is being a healthy person. Don’t forget how important it is to keep your body healthy if you hope to keep your mind healthy. Stay active, take your vitamins, and get enough rest. Remember, your body truly is a temple. So, the more you can treat it as such, the happier and more fulfilled you’ll be as a result.

Practice Positive Self Talk

It feels good to be told you’re doing a good job. However, relying on others to do all of the encouragement is not realistic. You also have to practice positive self-talk the same as you expect to come from others. Give yourself a pat on the back once in a while, and tell yourself what an awesome job you’re doing. Love yourself and this will encourage others to love themselves too.
